The purpose of the School is to promote the highest standards of quality training and to quality manage the provision of clinical training for a multidisciplinary occupational health workforce in England and Wales.

This is led by the Head of School and the Training Director and works across industry, defence and the NHS

The non-medical side is supported by the Deputy Head and includes nurses and Allied Health Professionals working in OH.

The National School of Occupational Health is a collaboration between NHSE WT&E and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine hosted by NHSE WT&E East Midlands.

Essential to the function of NSOH is excellence of training with the curriculum as the benchmark.

Specifically, the national school supports higher specialist training in Occupational Medicine NSOH contributed significantly to the  development of the new Occupational Medicine curriculum (OMST2022).

NSOH works very closely with academia, FOHN and educational providers to create, develop, harmonise and

implement curricula for other OH professionals. This aligns with NSOH’s objective of promoting interdisciplinary training as a means to enhance

the multidisciplinary team approach within OH. NSOH was one of the first schools within Health Education England (NHSE WT&E) to include

non-medical training and education in its objectives and will continue to do so as an underpinning initiative in all work streams.

Whilst the conventional training methodology remains an essential part of the operation, NSOH recognises other methods such as apprenticeship

and portfolio career as an important pathway to acquire the necessary skills and qualifications. As a matter of strategy, NSOH will continue

working with stakeholders to promote all routes to the speciality whilst maintaining the quality of the offer.

A few projects NSOH have been involved in include:

  • Working closely with the joint health and work directorate on a funding program for qualifications in 2023 and 2024
  • Raising awareness of placements within OH settings to improve awareness of the speciality
  • Working alongside SOM on career awareness days and a mentoring scheme
  • Training webinars and conferences
  • Supporting research into the OH workforce
  • Nurse titles with FOHN
  • Supporting an accredited technician qualification
