The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) is a science-led, charitable body and the UK’s leading authority dedicated to protect everyone’s right to a healthy working environment. Founded in 1953, BOHS is one of Europe’s largest occupational hygiene societies and the only professional society representing qualified occupational hygienists in the UK.

With over 1,800 members across 53 countries, BOHS provides internationally recognized qualifications, scientific conferences, and membership services across diverse fields of worker health. As the Chartered Society for Workplace Health Assessment, BOHS is the leading UK awarding body for health risk exposure qualifications, aligned with both the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and ISO standards.

Through its Royal Charter, BOHS awards professional qualifications and is responsible for the recognition of overseas credentials under the Regulated Professions Act 2022. Additionally, BOHS maintains the UK’s Register of Occupational Hygiene Professionals, accredited by the Professional Standards Association for Health and Social Care.

As the only UK-based examining board for occupational hygiene, BOHS qualifications are recognized by major employers and institutions, including the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), and the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA).  In December 2023, BOHS launched a new qualification pathway to replace the OHTA W500 series. Our certification systems are also aproved by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), ensuring alignment with industry training standards.

Accreditation and Endorsement

BOHS is one of 16 certification boards within the National Accreditation Recognition (NAR) Committee, promoting global respect for occupational hygiene certification schemes that meet or exceed the IOHA Model Certification Programme standards. To further raise awareness and standards, BOHS endorses a range of partner courses focused on essential worker health protection topics.
