PgDip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing | UWS

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) offers a specialised Occupational Health Nursing (OHN) program tailored for UK registered nurses who are already working in the occupational health sector.  The program provides essential training and equips students with the advanced skills required to deliver comprehensive health services in the workplace and upon successful completion of the program (PgDip), graduates are eligible to apply for Part 3 registration on the NMC register, which qualifies them as Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) in  Occupational Health Nursing.

The OHN program at UWS is led by experienced faculty with a deep understanding of not only occupational health but also Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN), with shared educational experiences with Health Visiting (HV) and School Nursing (SN).

The OHN program has a 50% practical and 50% theoretical elements that covers critical aspects of occupational health nursing, including the prevention of work-related injuries, health and safety regulations, ergonomics, stress management, health surveillance, and the management of long-term health conditions in the workplace. The curriculum is developed to provide both a deeper understanding of occupational health and the leadership skills necessary to manage teams and programs effectively. UWS focuses on nurturing leadership skills, which are critical for advancing in the occupational health nursing field. Students are prepared with the necessary tools to lead health programs, manage teams, and drive health and safety initiatives within and across organisations.

UWS offers a program that combines essential professional skills with specialised field expertise, in line with the NMC Standards of Proficiency for SCPHN (2022).  Understanding that students are already working in occupational health roles, UWS offers flexible study options, and the program is delivered part-time as a distance learning (online) program over 2 years (3 years for MSc). This allows students to continue their professional work while advancing their qualifications and skills without disruption to their careers.
