BSc in Occupational Health– a Two-year distance learning degree Programme.

Develop the knowledge and understanding to support healthier, safer workplaces and advance your practice in occupational health. This flexible online course explores contemporary occupational health, including workplace health risk management, health and work, fitness for work, mental wellbeing, attendance management, and leadership. You will develop the underpinning theory and evidence to support your professional practice in areas such as risk assessment, health surveillance, occupational health report writing, communication and health education, enabling you to contribute to and influence occupational health practice across a range of workplace settings.

Our curriculum covers a broad knowledge and understanding of theories, principles, and concepts relevant to occupational health (OH) including:

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for this programme will normally be a qualification as a health professional in a relevant topic, with a minimum of 240 credits at SCQF level 8 or equivalent. In addition, students must be working within occupational health practice part or full time. However, we are happy to discuss alternate access to learning options.

Course Information

The course is available on a university database called Moodle. All the modules / course program is fully online and accessible to suit shifts / work pattern. The students work through each module at their own pace within a recommended timeline.

RGU offer virtual classroom sessions and Students are encouraged to take part in offline student groups through social media, so they have peer support.

The Academic programme begins with an invitation to a virtual orientation welcome meeting the week before the course. There are eight modules in total over a two-year period allowing for summer break. The course begins annually mid -Sept  and interviews will start  in January 2024. We expect that during each module (32 weeks annually) the student will need as a minimum 10-hour study time a week.

RGU has three Occupational Health lecturers supported by other lecturers, associate lecturers and subject experts who offer added insights. Each student is allocated a personal tutor who will speak to each student at least once every term and additional appointments with any of the lecturers are always available.

Prerequisites- Need a Health-related degree at Hons level (2:2), or to have a relevant degree and have been working in Health /Social Care in any capacity as a professional for previous two years.

This Master Level degree will comprise five core modules from the School of Health, plus students choose a further three out of five modules from different areas including Law, Business School, and Computing. The degree is completed through a Dissertation module. Students also can complete the RGU Innovation Award.

As well as the BSc, RGU have introduced a 3-year MSc, aimed at those who already have a first degree. There is also the option to complete 2 years and exit with a PG Dip.

The PG Dip/ MSc programme aligns with the NMC’s Advanced Practitioner framework.
The BSc cannot be topped up to an MSc.

All courses are:

• Part-time
• Self-led, online distance learning with evening webinars
• Require the student to be working in OH

Entry requirements:

• BSc: Diploma-level study. Not having studied at this level is not necessarily a barrier, as they can complete an individual assessment
• MSc: A first degree (does not need to be in OH)
